Michigan surgeon collects medical supplies for Ukrainian hospitals

ANN ARBOUR, Mich. – In the midst of the nightmare that unfolds in Ukrainea local surgeon goes above and beyond to help you.

Michigan Medicine plastic surgeon Dr. David Brown gathered medical supplies to send to the war zone.

Every September for the past eight years, Dr. Brown has traveled to Ukraine with Doctors Collaborating to Help Children Corp. There, surgeons like Dr. Brown perform burn reconstructions on children.

He remains in contact with the medical staff he met in Ukraine.

“We have pictures of the hospital in Dnipro, which is in the east of Ukraine where we were in September, where they were bombed and had to move the babies from the intensive care unit,” said said Dr. Brown.

He knows that as doctors they can’t solve a war, but knows that every little bit of support helps, so Dr. Brown has organized a drive for medical supplies.

“We are sending supplies that are urgently needed to emergency rooms, trauma centers, children’s hospitals,” Dr. Brown said.

The list of items includes gauzes, bandages and syringes.

Local hospitals and nonprofit organizations donated supplies.

Two weeks ago, the first plane full of supplies left for Poland, then trucks delivered them to Ukrainian hospitals.

Dr Brown wants to send more and collects monetary donations here.

“Every dollar you contribute goes directly to funding medical supplies and missions in Ukraine without any administrative costs,” Dr. Brown said. “It’s also tax deductible.”
