How to Choose the Best Medical Supplies — Modern Mississauga Media

1. Know your health and what you need

This is essential because not all medical kits are suitable for everyone. If you don’t know what you need, it’s hard to decide which device to buy. A person with respiratory failure will need a tracheotomy Provisions, while a person with diabetes will need a glucometer. Knowing your health status ensures you get the necessary supplies. Research your particular conditions and see what types of medical packs are available to treat them. Once you know what you need, you can narrow down your options. You should also always talk to your doctor about it.

2. Consider your budget

Anything related to medicine is often ranked among the most expensive items a person will ever buy. That’s why it’s essential to consider your budget when deciding. There are many different factors to consider when budgeting for medical devices. How often do you expect to need it? What type of medication do you need? Are there any discounts available?

It’s essential to be realistic about what you can afford and find the best option in that price range. Don’t be afraid to ask family or friends for help either – they may be able to offer financial help or advice on where to find affordable kits. Shop around online and offline to compare prices before making a decision. It should also be determined whether or not you have insurance coverage for medical supplies. If so, find out which providers are covered by your insurer.

3. Choose a reliable supplier

Not all providers are created equal and some are better than others. When choosing a supplier, it is essential to consider quality, price and customer service. You should also make sure that the supplier is reliable and has a good reputation. Remember, these are medical aids we’re talking about; you don’t want to take any risks.

A good way to find a reliable supplier is to ask friends, family, and your doctor for recommendations. You can also read reviews online to get an idea of what other people think of different providers. Once you’ve narrowed down your options, contact the vendors and ask them about their products and services.

4. Compare products and prices

Once you’ve found a few reputable vendors, it’s time to start comparing products and prices. This will help you find the best deals on the health products you need. When comparing products, pay attention to quality, durability, and warranty coverage. It’s also important to shop around to get the best deal possible. Keep in mind that the cheapest option isn’t always the best, so don’t base your decision on price alone. Take all factors into consideration before making a final decision.

West Columbia Pharmaceutical Company Recalls Over 2 Million Doses of Generic Drugs | Colombia Business

WEST COLUMBIA – Nephron Pharmaceuticals has issued a recall of more than 2 million doses of 20 generic drugs it produces at its West Columbia manufacturing facility.

Drugs that relieve pain, reduce bleeding after childbirth, control blood pressure and are used in anesthetics were among those recalled. Notices posted on the US Food and Drug Administration website indicate that various pharmaceutical products are being recalled due to “lack of sterility assurance”.

Sterility assurance refers to the likelihood that bacteria, viruses or other microorganisms are unable to survive the sterilization process. Federal regulations require drug manufacturers to demonstrate a certain level of confidence in the sterility of their products.

“Out of an abundance of caution, Nephron is proactively cooperating with the Food and Drug Administration on a voluntary recall of a limited number of product lots,” CEO Lou Kennedy said in a statement. “We do not take this lightly. Although there was no impact on patient safety and there was no evidence of contamination, Nephron has decided, in the interest of patients, to continue this recall process.”

FDA officials traveled to Nephron to perform what the company called “a routine inspection…after being unable to visit, due to the ongoing public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. “.

The drugs involved in the recall are part of Nephron’s drug compounding operation, which produces in-demand and commonly used drugs for hospitals and medical clinics across the country.

Neither the FDA nor the company said what led to the concern surrounding its sterilization process, repeating only that “there was no patient safety hazard and no contamination.” Nephron did not disclose how much the recall will cost the company.

“Nephron is more confident than ever that it will learn from this and emerge stronger than ever by working hard as a team,” the company said in a statement.

The company’s drug compounding business remains in operation as the FDA continues its inspection process.

FDA officials did not respond to questions from The Post and Courier in time for the deadline.

SC Pharmaceutical Company Continues Expansion in Lexington County

Among the medicines recalled are: oxytocin, used to induce contractions during labor and reduce bleeding after childbirth; phenylephrine and labetalol, used to control blood pressure; ketamine hydrochloride, lidocaine, glycopyrrolate, succinylcholine chloride, rocuronium bromide, which are anesthetics, sedatives and anesthetic aids; neostigmine methyl sulfate, used to reverse the effects of muscle relaxants after surgery; epinephrine, used during cardiac arrest; calcium gluconate, used to treat calcium deficiency; sodium bicarbonate, an antacid; and hydromorphone, a pain reliever.

Nephron has sent notices to customers by certified mail and email. There is also a dedicated phone line for anyone with questions about the recall.

“The company is ready to provide the necessary resources and information to healthcare providers and patients to ensure they have everything they need and all their questions answered. They remain our top priority. “Kennedy said.

A total of 2.15 million syringes and more than 7,000 bags of drugs were involved in the recall, which the notice on the FDA’s website says is ongoing.

The recall has been listed as a Class II, the second of three classes used by federal regulators, which means the use of the drugs could have temporary adverse health consequences or the likelihood of serious health consequences is weak.

Nephron has the capacity to produce more than one billion doses of various pharmaceutical products per year, the company said. In its compounding operations, the company is licensed to manufacture some 125 types of sterile drugs, Kennedy previously told The Post and Courier.

The drugmaker has been on a wave of growth in recent years, building its sprawling campus to add production of at-home COVID-19 test kits and medical gloves, a new 110,000-square-foot wing where it will begin manufacturing chemotherapy drugs and a number of antibiotics, a new 200,000 square foot warehouse where it plans to fill vaccines, and a new subsidiary that will manufacture some of the medical devices and packaging that Nephron previously outsourced.

This is in addition to the respiratory medications the company has long been known for.

According to Kennedy, the company employs about 1,200 full-time and 2,500 part-time workers.

Pharmacy prices: some pharmacies ‘more than twice as expensive’ for prescription drugs

According to new research, the cost of prescription drugs can vary widely from pharmacy to pharmacy.

Almost all pharmacies in Ireland have been contacted for the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI) study.

He looked at 12 of the most commonly prescribed drugs here.

He revealed that aspirin cost up to €9.12 at the high end and less than €4.62 at the cheapest pharmacies.

Eltroxin – a drug for hyperthyroidism – cost almost €18.00 in expensive pharmacies, and less than €10.00 elsewhere.

While the steroid prednisolone could cost upwards of $11.25 and less than $6.00, depending on where it is purchased.

A total of 1,529 pharmacies responded to queries – and 88.5% of pharmacies that responded to queries provided prices.

For each drug, the average price listed was higher than the price paid by the state for patients with access to subsidized drugs.

It says evidence has been found of “significant price variation” in community pharmacies.

There was also evidence that some community pharmacies “did not follow regulatory guidelines on drug price transparency.”

He says policy measures such as mandatory price transparency or fixed prices for prescription drugs could help address these issues.

James Larkin is the lead author of the survey and a doctoral researcher in the Department of General Medicine at RCSI.

He said The Pat Kenny Show transparency is necessary here.

“The most expensive pharmacies could be more than twice as expensive as the cheapest pharmacies.

“We also found transparency issues. So about one in nine pharmacies that responded to us did not provide us with a price.”

He says whether or not pharmacies must provide prices is a “legal gray area.”

“The CCPC – the Consumer Protection Commission – says that it is the pharmaceutical regulator, the PSI, which should look into this.

“And on their website, it says that prices should be provided to patients.

“However, this is simply advice as opposed to [being] mandated – so that’s something the government might be able to shed some light on.”

“Mandate to provide prices”

He says people should be aware that prices can vary.

“I guess the issues we see are, first of all, making people aware that prices can vary – because I think there can be a perception that something as big as a drug, the price would be the same.

“So it’s an option to call – second, it’s harder to call if there’s no transparency.

“So we need some kind of clarity around a mandate to provide pricing – maybe on a centralized website?

“And then thirdly, consider a Danish system where the prices are the same in all pharmacies.”

And he says one surprise was that the big drugstore chains weren’t necessarily cheaper.

“We actually found that the prices were more expensive in the chains.

“Now, it’s worth pointing out that it wasn’t much more expensive, but nonetheless – given… the chains’ greater bargaining power – it was a surprising result.

“[It’s] something we might consider in the future”.

Prescribing generic drugs to reduce costs

The invisible hand of the pharmaceutical lobby behind the violations

On 25 03 2022, the National Pharmaceutical Prices Authority stated that the annual change in WPI stands at 10.76607% in calendar year 2021 over the corresponding period in 2020. This means that prices of essential drugs should increase by ten percent. hundred. There has been continued lobbying by a group representing more than 1,000 Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers who have urged the government to allow drugmakers to raise prices on all unscheduled drugs by 20% as the he pharmaceutical industry is struggling with rising input costs. Currently, unscheduled drugs have a maximum annual price increase of 10%. Consumers, already reeling from skyrocketing commodity prices, may have to shell out more for essential drugs like painkillers, anti-infectives, heart medications and antibiotics. The government is preparing to allow pharmaceutical companies to benefit from an increase corresponding to the evolution of the annual wholesale price index. In this regard, it is useful to revisit an earlier directive regarding the prescription of generic drugs by medical practitioners. The Medical Council of India passed regulations in 2002 which are binding on all doctors and state: “Use of Generic Names of Medicines: Every doctor should, as far as possible, prescribe medicines with generic names and he/she must ensure that there is rational prescribing and use of medicines Any violation of these guidelines will be considered “misconduct” which may lead to disciplinary action being taken against offending physicians In accordance with clause 8.2, if the doctor is found guilty of professional misconduct, the competent medical council may pronounce such sanction as deemed necessary or may order the removal in whole or for a specified period, from the register of the name of the registered practitioner. The removal from the registry should be widely publicized in the local press as well as in the publications of the various medical associations/societies/organizations.

At the time of registration, doctors sign a declaration which includes the following: “I will abide by the code of medical conduct as set out in the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations 2002.” From the above, it is clear that it is mandatory for medical practitioners to prescribe generic drugs whenever possible and failure to do so may constitute misconduct which may justify their deregistration. A generic drug can be defined as a drug created to be identical to an already marketed brand name drug in terms of dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and use. planned. These similarities help demonstrate bioequivalence, which means that a generic drug works the same way and provides the same clinical benefit as the brand name drug. This means that one can take a generic drug as an equal substitute for its brand name counterpart. Generics are cost-effective alternatives to brand name drugs, which can be used interchangeably but can be sold at a fraction of the cost. These drugs are identical to brand name drugs in dosage, strength, route of administration, performance characteristics, safety, and intended use. During the inauguration of a charity hospital in Surat in April 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed that the government will put in place a legal framework under which doctors will have to prescribe generic drugs to patients which are cheaper than generic drugs. Mark. It is unclear why the existing provisions prescribed by the Medical Council of India are not strictly enforced. It may be because of the invisible hand of a powerful pharmaceutical lobby. The government must not only enforce the provisions, but take action against those who do not prescribe generic drugs.

Ex-Pharmacy Technician in East Orange Jailed for Stealing Prescription Drugs – NBC New York

A former pharmacy technician implicated in the theft of more than $8.2 million worth of prescription HIV drugs from a northern New Jersey veterans hospital has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison.

Lisa Hoffman, 50, of Orange, pleaded guilty last November to theft of public property. She worked at East Orange Hospital, where she was responsible for ordering medications and supplies for the site’s outpatient pharmacy and maintaining its inventory.

From October 2015 to November 2019, prosecutors said Hoffman used his position to steal prescription HIV drugs from the hospital. She placed large orders for drugs, allegedly on behalf of the hospital, then stole them after they were delivered.

Hospital surveillance footage captured Hoffman routinely taking dozens of bottles of HIV medication from pharmacy shelves and eventually putting them in his bag, then leaving the hospital with the stolen drugs, prosecutors said. .

Hoffman regularly met with another conspirator and sold him the stolen drugs for cash. The conspirator would then sell the drugs to other people.

Hoffman received a 57-month sentence on Thursday. She must pay $8.29 million in restitution and will have to give up $450,000.

How to design successful medical products

Reading time: 4 minutes

Product design is a unique process that requires collaboration between designers, engineers and scientists. It is a constantly evolving process. And before saying that a design is successful, there are many R&D processes where prototyping plays a vital role these days. Currently, 3D printing is involved in prototyping medical products, but when you have access to bulk production, the injection molding prototype is an efficient process that you should consider to achieve your design.

If you want your product to succeed, it must meet the needs of the people who use it. Efficient and effective product design can help make medical products more accessible, and that’s what this article is about.

If you’re looking to design a new medical product, you’ve probably heard of the importance of market research, product design and development. But what does all this mean? And how does it all come together to create a successful medical product?

First rule – The design should be “less medical”.

As medical research advances, more and more people rely on medical gadgets to maintain their independence. These things can be designed to look amazing, improve quality of life and create a positive perception. Respirators, for example. Oxygen concentrators, pumps and elevators will become commonplace in the future. However, few people want to stand out from the crowd or be identified by their devices.

Design a medical product

Even more popular are gadgets that are used for overall health maintenance and monitoring rather than acute therapy. Individuals tend to be quite secretive about their health, so apps and wearable gadgets that help people maintain their health and fitness certainly don’t want to be too visible. Designers in the medical industry use the injection molding prototype process to make “less medical” designs more available.

Second rule – The device must be easily cleanable

After the design concept, this is the most important part of medical devices – they should be easily cleanable. The device you are about to design can be exposed to acids, alcohols, body fluids, reagents, and various types of bacteria and viruses.

As these are medical devices, they must not contain any harmful elements. Therefore, you must ensure that the design can ensure that users can clean it quickly and effortlessly.

Many products are made using plastic injection molding, which means that there will be tiny gaps between the housings and housings. If these are unavoidable, there are a few mitigation options. Although these seams can be concealed by overlapping elements or false coverings if necessary, the sealed space should be as tight as possible. Revealed deficiencies should be at least fingertip cleanable, depending on the environment in which the product will be used.

Third Rule – Understand User Demand

Medical devices must reconcile function and aesthetics. The device must be able to capture the consumer’s attention. It was not necessary in the past, but now people are more aware of the appearance of the device.

Medical gadgets that are both silent and non-obtrusive are becoming increasingly popular. Keep in mind that designers need to understand consumer needs at all levels, from broad to specific. Based on the information, a designer can create a design and design review form and checklist. This ensures that everyone is on the same page.

Fourth rule – It should be easy to grasp

Rough or abrasive textures are rarely found in a hospital or medical setting. When it comes to holding a product in your hand, it shouldn’t be too smooth or too sticky. The wearable shapes are designed to conform to the curves of the human hand while providing adequate tactile feedback without requiring a firm grip. Matte or lightly sanded textures are functional and appealing to the eye.

Fifth rule – Consumer opinion

People don’t always know what they need. They will be more than happy to tell you how they feel about anything, especially when it comes to their health. You can show them a design prototype and record their thoughts and feelings. You will most likely provide them with the technical side of things, while they provide you with their own opinions and thoughts.

Listen to their suggestions and apply them to improve the design. Find a method to incorporate their suggestions into yours.

Sixth Rule – Apply Color Carefully

Color plays a big role in the design of any product. When it comes to the medical product, you need to use your color smartly. For example, if the device has buttons, the security buttons must

Human beings have a deep emotional relationship with color. Warm hues like golds and yellows provide a sense of peace in prenatal environments designed to stimulate nurturing, while bright primary colors are entertaining and engaging for children in other scenarios. Bright colors provide vitality and excitement, which can be used in fitness or activity related health articles.

Conclusion

We have talked about six rules in this article. But this is not enough. There are other things to consider before designing a medical product. For example, the design should be simple and easy to locate. There are many other factors to consider. But we have discussed some of the main rules. We hope this article has been helpful to new medical product designers and engineers in training.

Senses urge FDA and USPTO to cooperate on generic drugs

By Dani Kass (May 26, 2022, 4:33 p.m. EDT) — A pair of bipartisan senators joined the appeal to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday to work more together on generic drug issues.

The senses. Maggie Hassan, DN.H., and Bill Cassidy, R-La., asked the heads of the two agencies for answers on how FDA drug information plays a role in USPTO review. pharmaceutical patent applications.

“The lack of coordination between the [USPTO and FDA] enabled the pharmaceutical industry to obtain patents of questionable validity,” the letter states. “Through these patents, drugmakers are able to delay the entry of generic drugs and…

Euro Roundup: EMA proposes to suspend 100 generic drugs for ‘flawed studies’ conducted by Indian CRO

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is set to suspend around 100 generic drugs placed on the market based on data from “flawed” bioequivalence studies carried out by the contract research organization (CRO) Synchron Research Services.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials stopped accepting data from the Indian CRO studies last year due to data integrity issues. EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) recently completed its own investigation after finding “irregularities” which “raised serious concerns about the company’s quality management system and the reliability data from this site”.

The CHMP found “no adequate bioequivalence data” for around 100 medicines tested by Synchron on behalf of companies in the European Union. Actavis, Johnson & Johnson, Mylan, Sandoz and Teva are on the list of MAHs whose products are recommended for suspension because they lack other sources of adequate bioequivalence data. Affected companies will need to provide alternative data to get the suspensions lifted, although there may be temporary reprieves for certain products.

“Some of the medicines recommended for suspension may be of critical importance (for example due to the lack of available alternatives) in a given EU Member State. Therefore, national authorities may temporarily postpone the suspension in the interest of patients. Member states should also decide whether recalls of the affected medicines are necessary on their territory,” the EMA wrote.

A smaller number of companies, including Accord Healthcare, Jubilant Pharmaceuticals, Lupin and Mylan, were able to establish bioequivalence with the European Union reference product and thus keep the products on the market. The CHMP found that the companies had adequate data from other sources.

MDCG shares guidance on the interface of clinical trial and diagnostic regulations

The European Commission’s Medical Devices and Clinical Trials Advisory Groups have joined forces to answer questions about the interface of the new regulations in their respective areas of expertise.

The heads of the Medical Devices Coordination Group (MDCG) and the Clinical Trials Facilitation and Coordination Group (CTFG) created the Q&A document to fill a gap in the guidance. While studies use tests, including tests that are not intended for development into commercial products, there is a lack of guidance in the Clinical Trials Regulations and the In Vitro Diagnostics Regulations (IVDR) on the subject.

The joint MDCG-CTFG document clarifies the requirements, explaining that IVDs used in clinical trials do not necessarily need to have a CE mark for their intended use. It is still possible to use internal IVDs without CE marking in the trials. The IVDR also makes it possible to use “a device for a performance study according to the IVDR in progress in parallel”.

Even so, tests that meet the definition of an IVD are subject to IVD legislation. Sponsors cannot circumvent the law by stating that a test or other instrument, including software, is for research use only. Once the sponsor allocates a product for medical purposes and meets the definition of IVD, it becomes subject to the legislation.

MHRA releases guidance on regulatory processes to manage drug supply disruptions

The UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued guidance on regulatory processes to manage disruptions in the supply of medicines.

In the guidance, the agency gathers information on the tools available to alleviate drug shortages. The guidelines explain that the MHRA can fast-track applications for marketing authorization “if there is compelling evidence of benefit in a public health emergency or if there is a supply shortage of a drug essential” verified by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.

The document links to application tools and guidance for new marketing authorizations and product change applications, before outlining other ways to mitigate shortages. The MHRA is discussing temporary exemptions to labeling requirements, imports of authorized and unlicensed medicines, license change applications and the options available to community pharmacies and wholesalers.

The MHRA issued the guidelines against the backdrop of a high-profile shortage of hormone replacement therapy in the UK. The guidelines refer to the shortage and the action the MHRA has taken in response to the supply disruption.

EMA considers further changes to diabetes trial guidelines after postponement of previous version

The EMA is seeking feedback on changes to the draft diabetes clinical trial guidelines it published for consultation in 2018. Work on the text has been halted due to the EMA moving to Amsterdam and COVID-19, and the hiatus led the agency to identify other potential changes. .

The agency set out its thinking in a draft discussion paper. After discussions within the CHMP, the EMA is considering modifying the data requirements for confirmatory studies for certain claims in the wording of the therapeutic indication. The EMA wants to know if a comparative study against metformin is still the right approach to obtain an unrestricted monotherapy indication given the changes in first-line treatment.

Other questions concern combinations. Today, the common wording for the combination indication is “adjunct to other hypoglycemic agents”, but some applicants have searched unsuccessfully for an initial combination therapy indication. The EMA is considering changing the indication to “in combination with other hypoglycaemic agents” and has offered two options to the industry.

The draft concept paper is open for comments until the end of August.

MHRA creates relief supply route guidelines to get drugs to Northern Ireland

The MHRA has published guidelines in the Northern Ireland MHRA Authorized Route (NIMAR). The UK government set up NIMAR to enable people in Northern Ireland to access prescription-only medicines, even if traditional regulatory channels cannot meet the need.

Brexit has created a rift between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. NIMAR is part of an attempt to remedy the situation. Where there is a risk that a clinical need in Northern Ireland cannot be met, NIMAR allows the supply of prescription medicines in accordance with UK and EU rules. The way is open for drugs, including those that are authorized in Britain but not in Northern Ireland.

If a medicine is on the NIMAR list, UK-based marketing authorization holders and wholesalers can ship it directly to end users in Northern Ireland. Alternatively, end users can access medicines through Northern Ireland-based wholesalers.

NICE recommends stand-alone mobile app-based insomnia treatment instead of sleeping pills

The UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended the Sleepio app as an effective alternative to sleeping pills for people with insomnia.

Sleepio offers a six-week digital self-help program that includes a sleep test and weekly interactive cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia sessions. The sessions aim to identify the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that contribute to insomnia. Users also keep a diary of their sleeping habits.

At £45 ($57) per person starting the first session of the program, NICE calculates that Sleepio saves money compared to sleeping pills and sleep hygiene in primary care. The calculation is based on data from nine sites that have previously introduced the app.

Local company ships medical supplies to Ukrainian hospitals amid Russian invasion – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — For Premier Inc., efforts to provide needed medical supplies to Ukraine are far from over.

Charlotte-based Premier, through its subsidiary S2S Global, began moving supplies to Ukrainian hospitals a few weeks ago. Supplies needed range from gloves and isolation gowns to medical equipment. Many hospitals have been destroyed as Russia continues its invasion of the Eastern European country, leaving providers without essential tools to treat the sick and injured.

“We are doing our best to help the terrible situation there,” said Colin Bain, president of direct sourcing. “We are committed to it. … We don’t send one container or five containers (or) 10 containers and then we’re out.

The first donation included more than 2,200 cases of medical supplies, enough to fill two 53-foot tractor-trailers. These products, worth around $250,000, have managed to enter Ukraine and are being distributed, said Lillia Taschuk, a regional sales manager whose family is originally from Ukraine. Around 20 pallets went to Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city and one that has recently seen heavy fighting. Premier is planning a second donation worth about $500,000, she said.

However, Premier’s donations are only part of the effort.

Buy your prescription drugs online

If you get your prescription drugs in the mail, you may rely on drugstore chains like CVS and Walgreens.

But times have changed; These days, the number of legitimate online pharmacies has increased, giving you plenty of low-cost options.

Consumer Reports has surveyed a number of online pharmacies and found that the savings can be substantial if you know where to shop.

In a recent Kaiser Family Foundation analysis, 3 in 10 adults who need a prescription drug said they hadn’t taken it as directed in the past year because the cost was too high. .

And it’s not just the uninsured who are struggling, according to Consumer Reports. Many insured persons may have high deductibles to meet before discounts begin.

A savings solution can be found online. Major retailers like Amazon and Costco offer discounted medications, as do sites like GeniusRx, Honeybee Health, and others.

To see if the savings are real, CR got to work, comparing prices so you don’t have to. In general, he found online prices to be low.

CR has also seen substantial savings if you order your medications for multiple months.

For example, at Ro Pharmacy, you can get a 30-day supply of generic Lipitor, a cholesterol-lowering drug, for $9.90.

One year supply? Just $19.80.

But there can be downsides if you pay for your medication out of pocket.

For one thing, that money generally won’t go toward your insurance deductible. Another downside: you may not be able to find your exact prescription.

Many of the sites verified by CR are not full-service pharmacies, so they may not offer insulin or brand name medications.

They practically only offer generic drugs at low prices.

Another problem: They might not do as good a job as your local pharmacy at checking for dangerous drug interactions.

The bottom line is that these sites could help you save money.

But if you take a lot of medications or complex medications, it may be best to stick to a local pharmacy.

Before trying an online pharmacy, make sure the site can deliver to you.

CR found that four of the sites they checked ship to all 50 states.

FDA releases Q&A on importing prescription drugs from Canada

Posted May 25, 2022 | By Mary Ellen Schneider

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has clarified the legal requirements for small entities to import prescription drugs from Canada.

In the final guidelines, released May 25, 2022, the agency provided 12 questions and answers aimed at providing plain language guidance for implementing the final rule on the importation of prescription drugs, which came into effect. effective November 30, 2020. These regulations were intended to reduce prescription drug costs by implementing Section 804 of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, allowing the importation of certain prescription drugs from Canada . (RELATED: HHS paves the way for importing Canadian drugsRegulatory guidance September 25, 2020)

The 2020 final rule outlines how states or Indian tribes, and in some cases pharmacists or wholesale distributors, could seek FDA clearance to import prescription drugs under a drug program. importing under Section 804 (SIP). Under the regulations, prescription drugs are eligible if they are approved by Health Canada’s Health Products and Food Branch (HPFB) and bear HPFB-approved labeling when marketed in Canada. In addition to not having FDA-approved labeling when marketed in Canada, drugs must otherwise meet the conditions of an FDA-approved New Drug Application or Abbreviated New Drug Application.

Certain prescription drugs are excluded from this program, including controlled substances, biologics; infused drugs, drugs injected intravenously, intrathecally or intraocularly, and drugs subject to a risk assessment and mitigation strategy (REMS), among others.

Under the final rule, SIP sponsors must also show that they can provide significant cost reductions for US consumers through importing.

Get medicine

Recently released guidelines explain how importers can obtain eligible drugs through an authorized SIP. An importer would buy prescription drugs from a foreign seller in Canada who received the drugs directly from the manufacturer. The supply chain for each medicine must be limited to three entities: a manufacturer, a foreign seller and an importer.

A foreign seller must be licensed to wholesale drugs by Health Canada and registered with the FDA as a foreign seller. “The foreign seller cannot have an international pharmacy license that allows them to distribute drugs that are approved by countries other than Canada and that are not approved by HPFB for distribution in Canada,” wrote the agency.

The FDA may choose not to authorize a SIP or may discontinue a SIP if the foreign vendor does not meet all requirements. An initial SIP submission does not need to identify a foreign seller, but the agency will not authorize the SIP proposal without foreign seller information.

Once the FDA clears a SIP, the importer has 30 calendar days prior to the expected date of arrival or entry – whichever comes first – to submit a pre-import request to the FDA. Entry of eligible prescription drug shipments is limited to the US Customs and Border Protection FDA-cleared port of entry.

Testing and labeling

Medicines purchased under a SIP must undergo testing, either by the manufacturer or the importer, to ensure authenticity, verify degradation and establish compliance with specifications and standards. If the manufacturer does not perform the tests, the importer must submit a forensic test plan to the FDA outlining sample selection and testing methods, and the name and location of the qualified laboratory that will perform the tests.

All imported prescription drugs must be relabeled for use in the United States, including medication guides, user instruction documents, and patient package inserts. The new labeling must include the importer’s National Drug Code (NDC) and a statement that the drug was imported from Canada, among other information.

After importation, each SIP sponsor is required to provide the FDA with cost savings information for US consumers and submit any adverse event reports.

The proposal was forwarded by the head of the HCMC delegation of NA deputies, chairman of the people’s committee of Phan Van Mai city during the third session of the 15th legislature of the National Assembly (NA) on 25 may.

He reviewed recent positive socio-economic changes after the Covid-19 pandemic was basically under control at HCMC. The city has experienced positive growth over the past four months thanks to the efforts, flexible policies and guidance of the municipal authorities.

The commercial services sector reached positive growth of 0.6% in May. Although key industries are recovering slowly, the tourism sector has rebounded strongly.

Draganfly and the delivery of medical supplies to Ukraine

A decade ago, the supposed meaning of the word “drone” was strongly associated with military aircraft that were unmanned. Today, the drone is less and less about military applications and more and more about peaceful ways to improve processes, help fight climate change, and create innovative new business models.

We write a lot about agricultural applications, infrastructure inspections, mapping and more, but the delivery of vital medical supplies is the only area where drones or UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have any real impact. . Regions of the world where the airspace is not as congested or regulated as the United States and Europe have created the right conditions for companies such as Zipline to design and implement effective medical supply delivery models. With millions of flights under its belt and daily operations in a handful of African countries, the model has proven to be correct, and its lessons are a valuable starting point for many new companies trying to meet similar in other geographical areas.

Such is the case with Dragonflya Canadian public company (NASDAQ: DPRO – CSE: DPRO – FSE: 3U8) that has designed and manufactures a delivery system rugged enough to withstand the rigors of a war zone.

We reached out to Cameron Chell, CEO of Draganfly, for an exclusive interview about his business in general and the efforts in Ukraine in particular.

“In 2021, we invested a lot of resources in Texas to develop a working model for delivering vital medical supplies to select areas,” Chell said. “At the same time, we worked on a process to use our aircraft to provide first responders with accurate situational awareness in certain scenarios, these efforts have attracted the attention of Resurrected soldiers of Ukraine or “RSU” and this relationship resulted in an order for 200 drones to be used in the war zones of the Eastern European country.

Cameron Chell

RSU, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization dedicated to helping the people of Ukraine, has received nearly $3 million in donations to date. The organization has many different projects aimed at alleviating the suffering of civilians and wounded soldiers.

“The main idea is to deliver necessary medicines and medical supplies to inaccessible places under the control of Russian troops,” Chell said proudly. “It’s a delicate job that requires robust hardware and a fine-tuned delivery process that Draganfly can provide through our temperature-controlled vehicles.”

The humanitarian nature of the mission allowed RSU and Draganfly to secure supply lines that begin in the United States and then involve a complex series of channels through the Netherlands, Poland and ultimately Ukraine.

“There is no doubt that in the current climate of supply chain shortages, meeting an urgent request for 200 drones was a challenge, but the Draganfly team came up with ideas that allowed us to ensure that each unit will be delivered to Ukraine by the end of the summer,” Chell said confidently. “RUS gave us this task, and we won’t let them down.”

When the conversation turned to the various challenges of being a public company in today’s economic climate, Chell was candid and direct.

“Valuations have come down significantly since last year – we have to accept that – but the market will find a balance, and we will return to value and reward strong balance sheets and strong business models,” Chell said in a tone. reassuring. “Our early funding rounds were all about investing in R&D, and now we’re focusing all of our energy on maturing a solid, reliable product that can make a difference and create stable revenue streams.”

The efforts made by the international community to help Ukraine are commendable, and initiatives such as RSU with the help of Draganfly are further proof that drones are here to stay and that the day we have them in our lifetime everyday is not that far off.

How Austin’s medical supplies end up in Ukraine

Tonya Levchuk’s mother is a master packer, which comes in handy when trying to win a war.

The big picture: The Liberty Ukraine Foundation, based in Levchuk’s home in East Austin, sends medical supplies, combat boots, military gear and other gear to Ukraine to provide troops in the bitter war.

  • Medical kits typically include tourniquets, chest decompression equipment, and suction devices.

How it works: “The fastest way to deliver supplies is to bring people to Poland,” Levchuk, who moved to Austin in 2012 to work in the tech industry, told Axios.

  • Postal services are expensive and can take weeks.
  • Due to global supply chain issues and a shortage of medical kits given the war, Europe itself is running out of many supplies.

So the foundation sends suitcases jam-packed with tactical medical supplies from Austin to the front lines.

The association raises funds to purchase materials and accepts in-kind donations.

  • In the living room of her home, Levchuk and family members who fled eastern Ukraine to join her in Austin pack the goods.
  • The suitcases are sent with travelers to Poland, then taken to the border, where they are met by another team of volunteers, who take them to the Eastern Front.

By the numbers: In the past six weeks, 25 suitcases have been shipped from Austin to Poland, along with $40,000 worth of supplies.

The bottom line: His foundation had to step in, says Levchuk, because “the international organizations that should prevent these things from happening have failed.”

Ban deals that keep generic drugs out of reach for New Yorkers – New York Daily News

Imagine having to pay $2,400 a year for your diabetes medication instead of $204. That’s nearly $4,700 for your arthritis medication instead of $240. How about $2,760 for your asthma prescription instead of $240?

That’s how much more brand name prescription drugs for these prevalent conditions cost, on average, than generic alternatives, without insurance.

Fortunately, generics are available to treat and manage diabetes, arthritis, asthma, and many other conditions.

But new drugs are being developed all the time, and people who need them may end up having to pay through the nose for brand-name drugs, even after generics have been developed and approved.

Why? Because brand-name drug makers pay generic makers to delay making their cheaper alternatives available to consumers.

These shady “pay-for-delay” deals protect drug company profits but hurt New Yorkers. And they cost American consumers billions of dollars a year – keeping low-cost drugs out of consumers’ reach for nearly a year and a half on average.

This is not correct, and there is a bill pending in Albany to ban late payment agreements in New York.

With very little time left in this year’s state legislative session, the state Senate is expected to pass this legislation, sponsored by Senator Alessandra Biaggi. The Assembly is expected to pass the companion bill sponsored by Assembly Health Committee Chairman Richard Gottfried, and Governor Hochul is expected to sign it.

The daily news flash

Days of the week

Find the five best stories of the day every afternoon of the week.

Ideally, Congress should ban late payment agreements nationwide, but there’s no reason for New York State to wait for that to happen.

California has enacted a law prohibiting transactions. This law is being fought in court, but that’s no reason New York City shouldn’t take a strong stand against a clear-cut, anti-consumer practice that is costing many of its residents dearly.

The imbalance between brand name and generic prices for drugs to treat diabetes, arthritis and asthma is typical; on average, brand name drugs cost five to nearly six times more than their generic counterparts — and up to 19 times more in highly competitive markets, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Americans pay three times what people in other countries pay for the same drugs.

Soaring prescription drug prices are making lifesaving treatments out of reach for too many New Yorkers who need them. No one should have to choose between buying medicine and paying for food or rent.

The health of New Yorkers, and for many their very lives, depends on their ability to afford the prescription drugs they need. There’s simply no good reason to keep affordable drugs out of reach for New Yorkers any longer than necessary. There is simply no good reason not to prohibit late payment offers.

Finkel is director of AARP in New York State.

Indian consignment of rice, milk powder and medical supplies expected to arrive in Sri Lanka

As India continues to help Sri Lanka in the midst of its worst financial crisis, a consignment carrying rice, powdered milk and medicine worth over SLR 2 billion from the government is expected to reach Colombo on Sunday May 22. The consignment, consisting of essential items such as medical supplies, was reported in Chennai on Wednesday by Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, MP Stalin.

Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister’s office had tweeted: “Honourable Chief Minister @mkstalin reported 9000 metric tons of rice, 200 metric tons of alcohol powder and 24 metric tons of essential medicines in a cargo ship in Sri Lanka to help the people of Sri Lanka”. Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka also tweeted about the aid which was branded as India “alongside its brothers in Sri Lanka”.

India has pledged $3 billion to Sri Lanka since the start of 2022

In addition, India has also pledged $3 billion to the indebted island country in the form of loans, credit swaps and lines of credit since the start of 2022. New Delhi has declared itself ready to work with the new Sri Lankan government to deal with the dire situation. in the foreign country, the general public protesting against the legislators.

Sri Lanka is in the grip of the worst economic crisis since its independence, with the country facing a shortage of fuel and soaring prices of essential goods. Prolonged power outages affected large numbers of people. This has further led to massive protests across Sri Lanka against people denouncing the government’s handling of the situation. Amid the crisis in Sri Lanka, India is increasingly becoming an outsider and a more reliable ally for Colombo.

In addition to aid provided to Sri Lanka during the COVID-19 pandemic and fertilizer chaos, New Delhi has pledged nearly $3 billion to cash-strapped Colombo through currency exchanges, lines credit for essential goods and loan repayments since January this year. During the pandemic and the fertilizer chaos in Sri Lanka, New Delhi had delivered nano-fertilizers to save Sri Lankan farmers.

Europe to suspend about 100 generic drugs after finding ‘irregularities’ in data at Indian CRO – Endpoints News

The European Medicines Agency is recommending the suspension of around 100 drugs after discovering data integrity issues at an India-based CRO that carried out tests for generic drugs.

The CRO in question, Synchron Research Services, is not the first to be put under the microscope for failing data. The FDA and EMA have raised similar questions in the past regarding data results from several India-based CROs, including Semler Research and GVK Biosciences. In the case of Semler, as in the case of Synchron, regulators require the drug sponsors to repeat their bioequivalence/bioavailability studies at another acceptable study site.

Synchron was also criticized by the FDA last September for similar data issues.

“The recommendation comes after irregularities were discovered in the way the CRO conducted bioequivalence studies, which raised serious concerns about the company’s quality management system and the reliability of data from this site,” the EMA said in a statement on Friday.

The companies whose generic drugs are affected are J&J, Sandoz, Viatris, Teva, Jubilant, Wockhardt, Accord Healthcare, Aurora Biofarma, Strides Pharma, Tillomed Pharma, Orifarm Generics, Stada, Brillpharma, Micro Labs, ratiopharm, Bennet Pharmaceutica, Medicair Bioscience Laboratories, Pinewood Laboratories and more.

But the EMA has warned member states that some of the medicines recommended for suspension “may be of critical importance (for example due to the lack of available alternatives) in a given EU member state. Therefore, national authorities may temporarily postpone the suspension in the interest of patients. Member States should also decide whether recalls of the medicinal products concerned are necessary on their territory.

With specific regard to regulators, according to the FDA’s untitled letter to Synchron last year, a 2019 inspection:

found unusual and inexplicable study records demonstrating that you engaged in practices and processes that undermined the analytical methods used in your business. After careful review of your company’s study records, we conclude that these practices and processes resulted in the submission of falsified study data to the FDA.

Healthcare facilities are adopting single-use and disposable technologies to reduce costs

Single-use or disposable medical devices are considered a significant cost savings over cost-effective reusable medical supplies. Thus, disposable medical supplies can help healthcare institutions reduce the costs associated with the logistics and reprocessing of reusable medical supplies.

Save money by using online pharmacies for prescription drugs

Consumer Reports has surveyed a number of online pharmacies and found that the savings can be substantial if you know where to shop.

ST. LOUIS — If you get your prescription drugs in the mail, you may be relying on drugstore chains like CVS and Walgreens. But times have changed; Nowadays, the number of legitimate online pharmacies has increased, giving you plenty of low-cost options.

Lviv-born KC doctor helps send medical supplies to Ukraine

title=s

Anna Grodzinsky, second from left, is seen with her grandmother Paulina, aunt Larisa, mother Tatyana, husband Dan and son Arthur during a trip to Ukraine in 2019. Grodzinsky is a cardiologist at Saint Luke’s Kansas City Hospital. Her parents emigrated from Ukraine to the United States when she was six years old.

Anna Grodzinsky

Anna Grodzinsky anxiously watched from Kansas City as the Russian invasion of Ukraine has begun. His aunt and 96-year-old grandmother were huddled in their home in central Lviv.

Many sleepless nights followed as Grodzinsky, a cardiologist at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute, observed how the war was affecting access to fresh food, affordable medicine and preventive health care services in the country where she is born.

That’s why she’s volunteering on Saturday with CURE Projecta non-profit organization in partnership with Saint Luke’s Health System, to send more advanced medical supplies to the people of Ukraine.

“They are obviously scared. They are worried. They can’t wait for things to normalize,” she said. “But they are not optimistic that it will happen anytime soon. So they try to move forward pragmatically.

When war broke out, Grodzinsky sent his grandmother small items like arthritis cream.

Along with Project CURE, she will help send over 200 hospital-donated kits filled with medical supplies such as bandages, syringes and wound care equipment worth over $200,000.

Grodzinsky was born in the city of Lviv in western Ukraine. She emigrated with her parents to the United States in 1990 at the age of six.

They landed in Colombia as refugees where a community organization based at the University of Missouri helped support her family’s resettlement. Her father became a nurse and her mother earned a master’s degree in health administration at Mizzou before moving to Kansas City in 1997.

Grodzinsky has returned to Ukraine four times since childhood, most recently in April 2019 when Volodymyr Zelensky was elected President of Ukraine. His sleepy hometown of Lviv was gaining ground as a tourist destination in Eastern Europe.

“At that time, Ukraine was becoming a bit more western, it was getting a bit more tech-savvy, and there were advancements that we considered positive,” she said.

When Russian forces invaded on February 24, she held her breath as the city shook.

Grodzinsky, whose research includes helping pregnant patients with heart disease, saw women in labor running for safety as bombs tore through Ukrainian hospitals.

She followed the media coverage when one of the bombs that hit Lviv landed just a mile from the apartment where she was born and read a New York Times article about a seriously ill boy named Arthur who fled to the border with his mother. He shares a name with Grodzinsky’s own son.

“It strikes a chord when you see the area where you were born under attack,” she said. “I just can’t.”

Grodzinsky set to work raising funds for an unending crisis for both those who fled and those who remained. She also took in a family friend who fled Lviv.

She said it was amazing to see her colleagues contributing financially to support not only her immediate family there, which is “hugely moving”, but also the larger refugee crisis as a whole. She wrote thanks to everyone she knows who has been supportive. They are 35 in total to date.

It’s a sign that while Ukrainian lives have been in limbo for nearly three months, the fatigue of those wishing to help in Kansas City has not set in.

“I hope this is a much-needed sign of solidarity,” Grodzinsky said, later adding, “It’s important for us to do everything we can to support Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, because it’s such an important channel and such an important buffer.” .”

How to help the CURE project

Project CURE is a nonprofit that ships medical supplies and equipment to more than 135 developing countries around the world, said Kristin Robinson, executive director of the Kansas City site.

The organization has been working in Ukraine with partners for over a decade. Since the start of the war, these partners have helped bring Project CURE shipments to Poland, before crossing the border into Ukraine.

The Kansas City distribution site, which opened in June 2020, still needs volunteers to help prepare shipments from their KC warehouse, Robinson said.

“People feel they want to do something, but they don’t know what they can do to make a difference,” Robinson said. “And so we just like to be an option to really make a difference on the pitch.”

She said they were thrilled Grodzinsky was among those helping out.

Those interested in volunteering can register via projectcure.org/about/location/kansas-city/.

Generic drugs

Consumer Journal: Generic Drugs, the FDA, and Insurance Companies – Who’s Scamming Who? | Business

On March 15, the United States Food and Drug Administration authorized Mylan Pharmaceuticals to manufacture the first generic version of the Symbicort inhaler – which I use twice a day – for the treatment of two common lung conditions: asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. I have asthma and was diagnosed with a mild case of COPD a year ago.

Without insurance, it costs $315 for 120 sprays, which is two months’ worth. With my insurance, it costs $89, which I’ve been paying Walgreens every two months for several years, most recently last week. A little research revealed that the lowest price of generic Symbicort is estimated to be around $204, which is 35% off the average retail price of $315.

So I called Walgreens and asked why they were selling me the branded inhaler instead of the cheaper generic. “Ask your insurance company,” the pharmacist told me.

Jawnelle, a representative from United Healthcare, told me that generic and Symbicort cost the same, $315, and that I would pay the same $89 for either. How is it possible ? I asked him. She replied, “That’s because they’re both level 3 drugs.” Also, she said, United Healthcare only covers Symbicort.

Not happy with his answers, I contacted Mylan to find out if the generic actually costs the same, and if so, when might it cost less. I mean, the FDA has clearly stated its “commitment to bringing to market generic copies of complex drugs that can improve quality of life and help reduce the cost of treatment,” as Sally Choe of the FDA.

I then called United Healthcare corporate communications to ask if it would allow cheaper generic coverage, so that we consumers don’t get ripped off. My Mylan contact was quick to respond that they would be answering my questions soon. My UHC contact said she would look into whether UHC would cover a cheaper generic. I will report back as soon as I receive their responses.

NOTE: If you have a breathing problem, you may have asthma and/or COPD and need Symbicort. Asthma, which affects around 25 million people, including more than 5 million children, is a chronic, long-term condition that obstructs the airways in the lungs, and which physical activity can make worse. It usually begins during childhood. It can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis and affects approximately 16 million patients, is a chronic, long-term disease that causes blockage of airflow and makes it difficult to breathe.

Symbicort is a metered-dose inhaler that contains both budesonide (a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation) and formoterol (a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways to improve breathing).

[CHET 529 update] Fidelity, the administrator of the Connecticut college savings plan I described last week, emailed some additional information to consider:

I wrote that “You must choose one or more Fidelity portfolios and you can invest up to $16,000 per year if you are a single filer or $32,000 per year if you are a joint filer”.

Fidelity said the $16,000 and $32,000 refer to a maximum donation to an individual beyond which you trigger a tax. In addition, there is no annual contribution limit. There is, however, a total account value limit of $300,000.

Additionally, as I wrote about last week, Fidelity offers CHET account holders 27 managed investment funds, including four types of investment portfolios: eight age-based portfolios, two static portfolios, 16 of individual funds and a portfolio of stable value. You can change your existing portfolios one day, your choice, twice a year. But you can add a new wallet at any time, “as long as it is one of the existing offers”.

Can buying prescription drugs online save you money? – NBC 7 San Diego

If you get your prescription drugs in the mail, you may rely on drugstore chains like CVS and Walgreens. But times have changed; Nowadays, the number of legitimate online pharmacies has increased, giving you plenty of low-cost options.

Another issue: They might not do as good a job as your local pharmacy at checking for dangerous drug interactions. The bottom line is that these sites might help you save some money, but if you take a lot of medications or complex medications, it may be best to stick with a local pharmacy.

Before trying an online pharmacy, make sure the site can deliver to you. CR found that four of the sites they checked ship to all 50 states.

Reaching out, TN to send 137 types of medical supplies to Sri Lanka – Reuters

Chenai: Tamilnadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian has said that 137 kinds of medical supplies worth Rs 28 crore will be sent to Sri Lanka within days.

Subramanian and Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan inspected medical supplies on Sunday.

Speaking to the media, Subramaian said 8 million rupees worth of medical supplies will be sent to Sri Lanka in the first phase.

As the first installment, 53 medicines and two special medicines will be sent. Medicines will be used in the treatment of colds and fever. These drugs are sent on humanitarian grounds to reach the affected people, whether Sinhalese or Tamil, he added.

Earlier on April 29, Chief Minister MK Stalin proposed a resolution in the State Assembly urging the central government to allow the state government to send essential items including rice, pulses, dairy products and medicines in Sri Lanka in the context of the current economic crisis.

Stalin said: On a humanitarian basis, we should provide them with support. People line up to get petrol and diesel. The power cut is there all over the country, public transport has also decreased. Tamils are suffering. Pesticide in Jaffna Estates is sold for ₹32,000 which used to be sold for ₹1,200.

In a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 31, Tamilnadu Chief Minister MK Stalin discussed Sri Lanka’s economic situation and offered to send relief materials, including food and state drugs in Sri Lanka, sources said.

Amid the worst economic crisis in Sri Lanka, India has taken another initiative to extend its support and has provided 12 shipments and over 400,000 metric tons (MT) of fuel to the island nation. The High Commission of India in Sri Lanka took to their Twitter account to make the announcement of the consignment. n12 shipments and over 400,000 MT of fuel!! The latest shipment of #Diesel from #India under the Fuel Line of Credit was delivered to #Colombo by Torm Helvig, the High Commission of India in Colombo tweeted.

Legal weed lowers prescription drug use, study finds

This article originally appeared on 2Fast4Buds and appears here with permission.

It has long been suggested and subsequently confirmed by research that passing medical marijuana laws has a significant effect on the volume of drug prescriptions. Now, a team of scientists from Cornell University has discovered that the same thing also happens when a state or territory legalizes recreational use of the substance by adults.

To arrive at these results, the researchers studied data collected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in all 50 states between 2011 and 2019. During this period, 18 US states plus the District of Columbia authorized the use of cannabis. for adults, with Colorado and Oregon being the first to do so in 2012.

REDUCED COSTS FOR THE PATIENT AND SOCIETY

Consistent with previous findings regarding the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes and in full accordance with the hypothesis proposed by the team, the end of cannabis prohibition leads to the end of the abuse of prescription pharmaceuticals. And since most of these drugs are either expensive or too expensive, their reduced consumption results in significant savings for Medicare and Medicaid.

A larger positive consequence associated with the legalization of cannabis is that many prescription drugs have serious side effects and replacing them with cannabis results in reduced harm and risk to the patient. The overuse of prescription painkillers is particularly dangerous, which has recently led to an opioid crisis that many experts and policymakers are calling an epidemic.

YET ANOTHER CASE FOR THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA

The list of conditions for which prescription volumes drop when cannabis becomes legal include pain, depression, anxiety, sleep, psychosis and seizures. This is yet another circumstantial evidence of the drug’s therapeutic efficacy. Although the study was not designed to provide an explanation for its results, the authors suggest that thanks to the greater availability of cannabis, some people are self-medicating with it instead of going to the doctor first. place. And since most primary care visits result in prescriptions, many Rx blanks remain unfilled.

Low-cost prescription drugs protected by new Hunter Act

SPRING FIELD – Access to low-cost prescription drugs will be protected through a measure led by State Sen. Mattie Hunter that was signed into law on Friday.

While the average adult spends $177 out of pocket on prescription drugs each year, affordability is a bigger issue for people who are older, on four or more prescription drugs, have chronic conditions, or have low incomes.

“People shouldn’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to get their prescription,” Hunter (D-Chicago) said. “People living with diseases and disorders need access to medicines, and we need to make them affordable for them.

New law protects access to low-cost “340B” prescription drugs for uninsured, low-income patients by prohibiting drug benefit managers and third-party payers from using certain contractual terms in contracts they enter into with health care providers benefiting from a safety net.

The federal 340B drug pricing program allows entities to stretch limited federal resources as much as possible, reach more eligible patients, and provide more comprehensive services.

“Health care is a right, and that includes access to prescription drugs,” Hunter said. “The Drug Pricing Program was created to reduce drug costs for those who need them, and this measure reinforces that.

Similar measures have been adopted in 16 other states.

Due to an expanding aging population and an increase in chronic disease, health care costs in America have risen dramatically over the years, with costs expected to reach $6.2 trillion by 2028. L ‘Illinois spends more on prescription drugs than the majority of the nation, spending a total of $18.64 billion in 2019.

House Bill 4595 takes effect July 1, 2022.

Growing awareness of personal hygiene and safety has accelerated the demand for disposable medical supplies.

One of the most promising opportunities for improving care and reducing costs is moving care delivery to the home. Key players are launching and adapting models to move primary, acute and palliative care to homes. Reed and Whitehouse seek to reduce the cost of insulin and prescription drugs

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) – Senators from Rhode Island are asking the US Senate to vote on a number of proposals, including one that would cap the cost of insulin at $35 per month.

If passed, the Affordable Insulin Now Act, co-sponsored by Sen. Jack Reed and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, would apply to both Medicare and private plans.

In Rhode Island alone, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) reports that nearly 93,000 people (or 10.5% of the state’s adult population) are diagnosed with the disease.

However, data from the ADA shows that many more are at high risk of developing diabetes. An estimated 23,000 Rhode Islanders have diabetes but don’t know it, while another 280,000 people (33.1% of the adult population) have prediabetes.

According to the ADA, medical costs for diabetics are more than double those of an average person. Direct medical expenses for Rhode Islanders with diabetes totaled approximately $778 million in 2017.

“Insulin prices have risen dramatically without the drug changing significantly in a century,” Whitehouse said at a Monday news conference.

The Health Care Costs Institute reported that the price of insulin nearly doubled from 2012 to 2016, with the average cost of a 40-day supply rising from $344 to $666.

Laura Jones, senior director of services at East Providence Senior Center, noted how crucial Whitehouse and Reed’s proposal would be for the people she serves.

“For seniors living on a budget, they often have to choose between refilling their medication, paying the electric bill, or buying groceries,” Jones said.

Watch: Reed/Whitehouse press conference (story continues below)

Jones recalled the story of an elderly diabetic whose cost of prescribing insulin skyrocketed without warning.

“One day she went to get her new bottle of insulin and her copayment went from $40 a month to $600!” said Jones.

The woman could not afford the price increase and went a week without insulin.

“She was terrified,” Jones added.

Jones said the senior was eventually able to resolve the situation with her doctor’s office and get her prescription reduced.

“But it leaves me wondering: what happens to all the other seniors who don’t have the means or the know-how to fight for affordability of medication? asked Jones.

The Affordable Insulin Now Act would create a $35 federal cap on direct insulin charges.

“We hope we can get this bill to the president’s office,” Reed said Monday. “It passed the House, it now has to pass the Senate, and it will be signed by President Biden.”

The House approved the bill in March by just 39 votes in favor. The Senate version was referred to the Finance Committee in February.

Reed and Whitehouse also partnered on four other bills aimed at making prescription drugs more affordable:

  • An Act Empowering Medicare Seniors to Negotiate Drug Prices (S. 833)
  • Drug Advertising Taxpayer Subsidies Ending Act (s. 141)
  • Safe and Affordable Importation of Prescription Drugs Act (S. 920)
  • Affordable Medicines Act (S. 1898)

The Empowering Medicare Seniors to Negotiate Drug Prices Act would allow Medicare to directly negotiate the best possible prescription drug price to reduce costs for the approximately 43 million seniors enrolled in Medicare Part D. The current law prohibits Medicare from do it.

The Veterans Health Administration, operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), can purchase prescription drugs at discounted prices, as well as negotiate greater discounts.

“It saves the Veterans Administration millions and millions of dollars a year and provides needed pharmaceuticals for all of our veterans, and we can do that for everyone,” Reed said.

Woofin Palooza Owner Pleads Guilty to Federal Fraud, Mislabeling Prescription Drugs for Pets

One of the founders of Woofin Palooza, which posed as a pet rescue and adoption organization in Multnomah and Columbia counties in Oregon, pleaded guilty on Friday to defrauding more of 280 customers by concealing that the animals to be adopted had medical and behavioral problems.

Tori Lynn Head, 26, pleaded guilty to two counts, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and distributing pet medication without proper labeling.

Head, who is still not in custody, will be sentenced Nov. 18 before U.S. District Judge Marco A. Hernandez in federal court in Portland.

Assistant US Attorney Ethan Knight said Woofin Palooza also collected more than $82,000 in “simulated” adoption fees, saying the fees were necessary to obtain the boarders’ pets.

In fact, many animals were sick or had behavioral issues and required additional veterinary care costing more than $142,580, Knight said.

Head and others also demanded customers pay more than $23,000 in spay or neuter fees, saying the company would reimburse those who adopted the pets after the procedures were completed. Still, those refunds haven’t happened, according to Knight.

In addition, Head and others ordered drugs in Florida and Nebraska using fraudulent prescriptions and obtained drugs that were prescribed to pets in Merced, Calif., according to the government.

Head and others mixed the drugs in bottles and did not tell customers what was really inside, mislabeling the bottles, Knight said.

The fraud occurred from December 2019 to January 2021, authorities said.

Head also faces a separate indictment in Multnomah County Circuit Court with more than 200 animal abuse and neglect charges, alleging that Woofin Palooza improperly housed and confined more than 100 dogs and cats. The indictment in state court was filed in May against Head and his co-owner Samantha Miller, 52. Both have pleaded not guilty to the charges against the state.

Multnomah County Animal Services launched an investigation in the summer of 2020 after receiving complaints about the Portland business, located in the 2300 block of northeast 82nd Avenue. The agency conducted an inspection on August 1, 2020 and found dogs crammed into dirty kennels and unsanitary conditions.

Miller has a federal civil lawsuit pending against the county, arguing that the Woofin Palooza investigation was prompted by county animus toward the landlords and that the business owners committed no crime.

Ghanaian doctor based in Germany donates medical supplies worth €164,000 to Manhyia Hospital

A Ghanaian doctor based in Germany has donated medical supplies worth over €164,000 to Manhyia District Hospital in Kumasi.

The items aimed at improving the delivery of quality healthcare in the hospital were delivered by Hilf Ghana eV, a company based in Germany.

Items include; blood pressure monitors, hospital beds, examination couches, mobile infusion stands with wheels and walkers.

Others are; wheelchairs, cots, ultrasonic devices, ventilator, infusion equipment, dental chairs, among others.

Dr. Abass Ganihu said this is part of his plan to help health facilities improve their services to Ghanaians.

“It’s not the first time. I do it three times a year,” he said.

Dr. Abass Ganihu is a Ghanaian doctor working in Germany.

It has imported about five containers full of medical equipment and consumable medical supplies which will be distributed to health facilities across the country.

“Next week I will be in Zebilla, Sapeliga and Binduri,” revealed Dr Ganihu.

Meanwhile, he expressed concern about what he said were the huge import bills paid to get the items delivered.

Also, there were difficulties in getting the items distributed to the required facilities due to some challenges with the Food and Drugs Authority.

“Last time the bill they gave me in a one foot container was over $400,000. They really wanted to take it. I had really tough challenges with the Food and Drugs Board he complained.

Manhyia District Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in the Ashanti region, almost on par with the regional hospital.

It performs around 80 deliveries in a week, with one of the highest attendance rates in the outpatient department (OPD).

However, insufficient infrastructure remains one of the main challenges facing the hospital.

The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Kamarudeen Korku Hussein, says the facility needs expansion and more equipment.

He said the donation was timely as the facility wants to provide better service to patients.

Britain’s rivers are flooded with statins, antidepressants and prescription drugs

Statins and antidepressants are among the worst drug polluters in England’s rivers, scientists have found, as they called on GPs to consider social prescribing rather than medication.

Experts from the University of Bath say people should be more aware that drugs have a harmful impact on the environment once they leave their bodies.

In a new study, researchers analyzed chemicals in rivers and sewage in Bath, Bristol, Chippenham, Keynsham and Trowbridge, and found a large number of substances linked to prescription drugs, daily activities like showering and dishes and drug addiction.

The main offenders were painkillers, antibiotics, drugs used for heart problems, mental health problems, epilepsy and lifestyle drugs. The statin atorvastatin was among the most frequently found, as well as the antidepressant fluoxetine.

    Lifestyle choices impact environmental health

“Each of us needs to start looking at our lifestyle as a contributing factor to deteriorating environmental health,” said lead researcher Professor Barbara Kasprzyk-Hordern from Bath’s Department of Chemistry.

“Our lifestyle choices, related to the household and beauty products we use and the pharmaceuticals we consume, have a direct impact on the environment around us.

“Most of us are unaware of this impact because each use of a product results in small amounts of toxic waste that cannot be seen with the naked eye, but when taken together these small amounts are creating a complex chemical cocktail in our rivers that could have adverse effects on the wider environment, especially aquatic creatures.

For the new study, the researchers tested various chemical and biological agents from rivers and sewage, including personal care products (UV filters and preservatives in cosmetics), pesticides, illicit drugs, styling chemicals lifestyle (such as caffeine and nicotine), prescription drugs and genetic material (such as antibiotic resistance genes).

They found a noticeable effect at weekends for illegal drugs such as cocaine and MDMA, with recreational narcotics increasing significantly on Saturday and Sunday.

Scientists have also discovered a direct link between the size of a city and the amount of harmful chemicals and biological agents released.

They suggest awareness campaigns to stress the importance of returning unused medicines to pharmacies rather than flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash.

    Benefits of social prescribing

And they say social prescribing could offer an alternative to drugs, such as people with mental disorders being offered talk therapies, or people being asked to start exercising or gardening to improve their health. and their mood.

Professor Julie Barnett, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Bath and responsible for the social science work on the project, added: “There is considerable scope for changes in prescribing practices to have an impact on the environmental health.

“Which pharmaceuticals are being prescribed or de-prescribed, whether social prescribing may be appropriate, and how we dispose of unused pharmaceuticals, are all areas where changes can make significant differences to the health of the wider environment. .”

Pharmaceuticals in treated sewage effluent are currently unregulated in the UK, but the team, who worked with Wessex Water on the project, said social interventions to prevent chemicals from entering in the rivers would probably have more impact than trying to treat the water.

Ruth Barden, Director of Environmental Solutions at Wessex Water, added: “It is often more sustainable to tackle the problem at the source, for example through social interventions, than to invest in wastewater treatment processes. end-use energy consumers that don’t necessarily help reduce society’s carbon footprint or provide broader environmental benefits.

1,414 pounds of prescription drugs collected by Sheriff’s Office, DEA

COOK COUNTY, IL – The Cook County Sheriff’s Office collected 1,414 pounds of pills during recent National Prescription Drug Recovery Day events, which allow residents to safely dispose of potentially harmful drugs, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

“We need to safely get unused and unwanted prescription drugs out of homes so they don’t end up being misused or harming anyone,” Sheriff Dart said. “These events are a great way to reduce the risk of poisoning and prevent medication from falling into the wrong hands, which is so common.”

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office operates one of the largest prescription drug take-back programs in the nation, overseeing or managing 120 permanent, easily accessible drop-off locations. Since 2017, the program has collected and properly disposed of more than 155,172 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter medications, including 7,167 pounds so far this year.

The public can learn more about the program by calling toll-free 1-84-GOT USD RX (1-844-688-7379) or by visiting www.cookcountysheriff.org/rx/home to display an interactive map of collection locations.

On Saturday, the Bureau hosted a take-back event at Prospect High School in Mount Prospect as part of the national drug take-back initiative. The event was co-hosted by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, State Senator Ann Gillespie and State Representative Mark Walker. Office take-back and recycling events were also held across the county to celebrate Prescription Drug Take-Back Day over the weekend.

“The successful collection and disposal of unneeded medications on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is not possible without the partners of DEA law enforcement agencies, including the County Sheriff’s Office of Cook,” said Robert J. Bell, special agent in charge of the DEA’s Chicago Field Division. . “The large amounts of unwanted prescription drugs collected each year on Recovery Day reflect our shared commitment to the safety and health of our communities.”

Rep. Walker said, “Ensuring the proper recycling of prescription drugs and electronics benefits everyone by keeping our drinking water and environment safe. I am grateful to have partnered with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the DEA on National Drug Drop-Off Day and would encourage residents to connect with our local municipalities if they need recycling services. of drugs.

Senator Gillespie said: “Events like these keep our community safe by proactively disposing of prescription drugs that may fall into the wrong hands. I am grateful to have the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the DEA as partners in keeping drug addiction from growing in our state.

Generic drug performance and opioid settlements at the center of Teva’s first quarter results

    JHVEditorial photo/iStock via Getty Images

Teva pharmaceutical (NYSE: TEVA) is expected to announce first-quarter results on Tuesday, May 3, before the market opens.

The EPS consensus estimate is $0.55 (-12.7% YoY) and the revenue consensus estimate is $3.75 billion (-6.3% YoY).

Over the past 2 years, TEVA has exceeded EPS estimates 75% of the time and exceeded revenue estimates 25% of the time.

Over the past 3 months, EPS estimates have seen 0 upward and 6 downward revisions. Revenue estimates saw 0 upward revisions and 5 downward revisions.

In February, Teva reported fourth-quarter 2021 non-GAAP EPS of $0.77 that beat estimates, though revenue of $4.1 billion missed expectations.

The Israeli generic drugmaker had also guided 2022 revenue between $15.6 billion and $16.2 billion against consensus revenue estimates of $15.85 billion, and non-GAAP EPS between 2.40 and $2.60 vs consensus EPS estimate of $2.53.

Investors will focus on the performance of Teva’s generic drugs in North America and the United States, where sales have fallen due to increased competition, lower volumes and fewer generic launches.

The focus will also be on Teva’s settlements with U.S. states and regulators regarding its alleged role in the opioid crisis and its pursuit of national opioid settlement. In the first quarter, Teva reached settlement agreements with Florida, Rhode Island and Texas.

Also in the first quarter, AbbVie (ABBV) reached a settlement with Teva’s partner, Alvotech Holdings, over their dispute over a biosimilar for Humira, AbbVie’s lead arthritis treatment.

In April, Barclays raised its rating on Teva, noting an increase in revenue projections for the biosimilar Humira, while arguing that, in light of opioid deals with separate states, there is a higher likelihood that Teva reach a global opioid deal.

Ingel has over 30 years of experience in healthcare, having held several positions in sales, marketing, operations and solutions for Enovis – formerly DJO Global. Ingel succeeds Jeremy Perkins, who will remain with the company as executive chairman of the board.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead Precision Medical and to begin working with its exceptional leadership team and talented organization of professionals,” Ingel said in the statement. “There are tremendous opportunities ahead given the company’s existing technologies, robust pipeline and manufacturing platforms, and I look forward to leading its next stage of growth. Together with Jeremy and the team, I am confident that we can continue to set the standards of excellence and drive industry innovation for our customers, patients and employees,” added Ingel.

“Steve Ingel brings extensive medical device and digital health experience with a proven track record of driving growth, margin expansion and overall financial performance,” Perkins said in the release. “His broad and deep industry experience, combined with his respected leadership and team spirit, make him the perfect fit to continue our important work at Precision Medical.”
